Sales of second hand bulk carriers, amid the ongoing and particularly acute slump in transport rates, has skyrocketed over the recent period, according to data cited by Allied Shipbroking.
According to the Piraeus-based shipping brokerage firm, during the course of the current year 482 bulk carriers have changed hands so far. The same figure for all of 2015 was 455 vessels; 467 in 2014.
Of the vessels that changed hands in 2016, their total capacity stood at 35.83 million dwt, and with a value reaching 4.24 billion USD.
Conversely, Allied reports only 30 new orders for bulk carriers during the year, which the firm G. Moundreas said is linked with the exceedingly low prices for second-hand vessels.
