“Shipping is the heart of Europe. Safeguarding its leading position requires immediate and joint action,” noted Melina Travlou, president of the Union of Greek Shipowners, in the context of the European Shipping Summit 2025, which took place in Brussels.

“At a pivotal moment for European shipping, but also a defining moment for Europe itself… it is imperative that shipping is recognized by the institutions as a foundation for the economic sovereignty and geopolitical stability of the European Union.”

“Policies need to be established and implemented immediately that will ensure the protection of the leading position of European shipping on the global map, taking into account that competitiveness and sustainability are not opposing forces, but harmonious ones that need to act in parallel and interact,” emphasized the president of the Union.

In the context of the European Shipping Summit 2025, the leadership of the Union of Greek Shipowners also held a series of important meetings in Brussels with European officials.

During the meetings, the crucial role of shipping in food and energy sufficiency and stability, as well as in safeguarding the smooth functioning of Europe’s supply chains, was highlighted. Furthermore, the contribution of shipping to maintaining European competitiveness was underlined.

In the meeting with Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport & Tourism, the Union stressed the need for a balanced and effective global regulatory framework, which reflects the international nature of shipping, highlighting its commitment to effectively cooperate with policymakers.

Through its multi-level actions and substantive contacts, the Union once again confirmed its leading role in European developments, consistently, decisively and insightfully promoting the interests of Greek and European shipping at the highest level.
