The conflicts in Ukraine and the Red Sea have seriously affected bulk carriers and tankers arriving in Piraeus – Elefsis.
The president of the Ship Agents Union of Attica – Piraeus (SONPAP) Nikos Phirippis referred to the impact caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but also to the effects that conflicts in the Red Sea may have.
He pointed out that the number of tankers and bulk carriers arriving in the wider area of Piraeus (Piraeus – Elefsis) decreased sharply in 2023 compared to 2022.
In statements to “Naftemporiki”, he said that the reduction reaches even 40%, which negatively affects both the operation of maritime agencies and a number of operations, such as supplies, repairs, etc.
“2023 was a difficult year and especially for our profession, maritime agents. The messages I received from colleagues are not optimistic. On the one hand, the war in Ukraine and on the other hand the problems that have arisen in the Red Sea, have resulted in several ship losses in Piraeus,” noted Phirippis.
In tramp shipping, in which SONPAP member companies specialize, we have a significant decrease in ship arrivals, the president of the Union added.
He also addressed the daily issues that arise in the work of maritime agents, making special reference to the passage of ships outside the Naval Station.
As he said, until recently ships of 120 meters and above were required to use a tug.
However, the new regulation mandates the use of a tug for all vessels of 1,000 gross tonnage and above. “This means ‘all ships except tugs,'” he underlined and added that a small bunker ship, for example, can pass even three times in a day, as a result it needs to pay a total amount approaching 8,000 euros.
