Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis arrived in Israel on Monday. As the prime minister’s office announced, Mitsotakis will meet shortly with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. The prime minister will return to Athens in the afternoon.
The prime minister’s visit to Israel had not been made known. The prime minister was originally expected to travel to Israel last week, but his visit was postponed due to security concerns.
It is recalled that Mitsotakis participated last Saturday in the proceedings of the Cairo Summit, where he underlined that “no military intervention can replace a sustainable political solution.”
“The key message we need to send today is that we all condemn terrorism in all its forms and mourn the loss of life and harm to innocent civilians, from the violence in Israel and Gaza following the October 7 terrorist attacks by Hamas,” the Greek premier noted.
At the same time, he underlined that Greece’s position was clear from the beginning regarding the fact that Israel has the right to self-defense in accordance with international and humanitarian law and emphasized that collective punishment is prohibited by the laws governing wars.
