The residents of Karditsa and Farsala received messages via the emergency number 112 early on Wednesday advising them to avoid outdoor activities due to dangerous weather phenomena.
Meanwhile, the Operations Center of the Fire Brigade received 1,196 calls from Tuesday morning until Wednesday at 6 am to pump water, cut trees and transfer people to safe places.
According to the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the severe weather conditions are expected to continue until Thursday, causing heavy rains and storms, a high frequency of lightning, strong winds in the Aegean and a drop in temperatures.
On Wednesday, winds that are expected to reach 7 on the Beaufort scale accompanied by rainstorms and lower temperatures.
The Greek record for rainfall within 24 hours broke on Tuesday as storm ‘Daniel’ sweeping through most of Greece caused heavy rainfalls. Problems also occurred in the power network at Volos, Mt. Pilio, other areas of the Magnesia prefecture, as well as in the Sporades Islands.
“According to meteorologists, this is the most extreme phenomenon in terms of maximum rainfall within 24 hours since Greece first kept such archives. Meteorologists believe that the millimeters will rise. This means the phenomenon has not exhausted itself,” Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said.
