Retail sales up 1.4% in January

The retail sales volume index (turnover in fixed prices) rose 1.4% in January compared with January 2022 but fell 12.9% from December 2022.

The volume of retail sales rose by 1.4% in January this year compared with the same month in 2022 despite a decline in turnover recorded in supermarkets and fuel stations, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Friday. More specifically, retail sales grew 29.7% in furniture-electrical appliances-home equipment, 27.9% in department stores, 23.8% in clothing-footwear, 3.7% in bookstores, 1.6% in pharmaceuticals-cosmetics and 1.4% in food-alcohol-tobacco, while they fell 5.3% in supermarkets and 3.2% in fuel-lubricants.

The retail sales volume index (turnover in fixed prices) rose 1.4% in January compared with January 2022 but fell 12.9% from December 2022. The seasonally-adjusted index rose 0.7% in January from December 2022. The retail sales turnover index (turnover in current prices) rose 10.8% in January compared with January 2022 but fell 15.4% from December 2022. The seasonally-adjusted index rose 0.9% in January from December 2022.
